Always a delight to get acquainted with a gallery of noble men — as if we’ve been invited into a salon, browsing portraits of 16th-century lords while we wait for the host to arrive down some imposing staircase. Bela Tarr’s tracking shots through hazy taverns placed everyone on the same level; here, each figure has a different relationship with the camera — their gaze and level of attention seemingly dependent on distance. Luckily, a monobloc will always be at arm’s length, till the end of time.
