Beachcomber: One Shot Whenever

0040

This is the fortieth shot, so it needs to feel sacramental – 40 is the number of trial and transformation, and the film is more religious than it realizes: Noah's ark endured 40 days of the Great Flood; Moses fasted for 40 days before receiving the Ten Commandments; Jesus spent 40 days and nights in the desert, tempted by the Devil; 40 days passed between the Resurrection and the Ascension. It's high time our hero shows us his wounds, proving how much he has suffered and how badly he needs redemption. He rewinds the tape by hand (how very 90s) to retrieve his past and introduce his beast – something has to spin to set the story in motion.
