Back to biblical iconography – as if hopping across the axis flips an on/off switch. This Byzantine panel naturally has an avaton at its center, flanked by two guards (one lies and one tells the truth). Elias’s skin adapts to the landscape like a Zelig who just wants to fit in. But as Byzantine aesthetics would have it, all human figures are doomed by the lack of perspective.
