Elias suddenly kneels as if he’s talking to a child about something important in the adult world, or maybe he is pantomiming drowning. Not only can we not see the woman’s gaze, but we can’t even see her face when she asks something difficult. We can’t trust the answer, which is compromised along the way, but mostly we can’t trust the question, which feels smaller than small talk. It’s always more interesting to find the answers in the image, and the ones on Elias’s body make us feel we’re back in the Altamira Cave, ready to see someone else’s truth for the first time.
