Refreshing to see a man in the window – in cinema history, it's usually women (or cats) occupying this spot. We're still behind the glass, enjoying a disruption of the quadrant system. The horizon line sits exactly in the middle; the window grid draws our attention upward. Maybe someone is bearing a cross (not Cartesius). His gaze is directed at a boat, but it takes effort to discern it. The false symmetry between the shadow of a figure and a curtain (both cues for acts of concealment) is disrupted by movement. He turns his head: will he look back at his past, or meet us straight in the eye? Neither.
